Enrichment at Abbey Wood Nursery School
We offer a wide range of additional experiences to inspire, challenge, and support our children. Because every child is an individual, our enrichment activities adapt to meet their changing needs.
Here is a look at the exciting adventures we shared during the 2025–26 academic year.
🌳 On-Site Forest School
We are incredibly fortunate to have our own dedicated Forest School right here on the Abbey Wood Nursery School grounds. Children enjoy outdoor learning without ever needing to leave our safe environment. Our certified Forest School Leader plans engaging, hands-on outdoor sessions that build confidence, resilience, and a deep connection to nature. (Discover more on our dedicated Forest School page).
🎭 Cultural & City Adventures
We love taking learning beyond the classroom to give children memorable real-world experiences:
The Unicorn Theatre: Our older children took an exciting train journey into central London for an immersive theatre performance of the three little pigs. For many, the train ride itself was a thrilling new milestone.
The National Maritime Museum: A fun-filled day out exploring local maritime history and interactive exhibits using public transport.
Woodlands Farm: A hands-on visit via public transport where the children met, learned about, and interacted with live animals.
Inclusive Community Visits
London Museum Docklands: This fully accessible venue wais a highlight of our calendar. As the museum is so inclusive we invited parents of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to join us on this trip. It offers families a safe, fully supported day out alongside staff who understand their children's unique needs, providing all those that attended real-world strategies for community outings.
🎨 Community & Creativity
The Community Mural: Our children collaborated with the University of the Third Age, our local care home, the local community and families during Stay & Play sessions to create a beautiful community mural. We were honoured to welcome the Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Linda Bird, to the Nursery School for the official unveiling.
Our Nursery Library: We celebrated the grand opening of our brand-new library space, sparking a lifelong love for reading and storytelling.
🎈 Special Events & Celebrations
Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday: A whole day dedicated to nature in honour of his centenary milestone! The children built bug hotels, constructed their own binoculars, and went on exciting bug hunts.
July Family Box Adventure: We are currently planning a grand summer adventure focusing entirely on open-ended creativity with cardboard boxes!
🌱Learning About Life Cycles
Our Nursery Fish Tank: The children love observing our resident fish and learning how to care for them. This hands-on experience teaches them about aquatic environments, responsibility, and daily animal care routines.
Living Eggs Project: Every year, we welcome ten eggs to the nursery and eagerly watch them hatch into fluffy chicks. Families love joining us for our special Saturday Chick Stay & Play a beloved tradition where our leavers can return to hold the chicks!
Raising Butterflies: In the summer term, each classroom receives packs of chrysalides. The children get to experience and watch them transform into beautiful butterflies up close before setting them free.
